Rising about 572 meters above sea level near the French border, Wegelnburg is the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate Forest. Built during the 12th century, the fortress once watched over the surrounding valleys and important routes through the region. Today, the weathered sandstone ruins stand above an endless sea of forest, offering far-reaching views across the Palatinate Forest and into the Alsace region of France. Its remote hilltop setting and dramatic scenery make Wegelnburg one of the most atmospheric castle ruins in southwestern Germany.
