Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced the launch of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway, marking what he called an important milestone for regional connectivity.

Pashinyan made the announcement on Facebook, highlighting that the railway – along with Armenia’s existing rail links – will now be open for import and export operations, The Caspian Post reports.

“I am pleased to announce that the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway, as well as Azerbaijan’s railway, is now open for export and import to Armenia. This is a major event in the economic life of our country. I would like to thank our partners from Türkiye and Georgia,” he wrote.

He noted that Armenia already maintains rail connections with Russia via Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as routes linking it indirectly to China through Russia and Kazakhstan.

He added that new direct rail links are expected in the future between Armenia and Türkiye, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and potentially through Nakhchivan toward Iran as part of the TRIPP project.
