I am not sure what they hope to accomplish with this.
They have burned all of their bridges with Canadians and the chattering classes in this country. Everyone in the administration and their ambassador are reviled. Our view has become that we are “damned if we do and damned if we don’t” so lets set our own priorities. Whatever is going on behind the scenes, our politicians feel no public pressure from Canadians to acquiesce.
Trump equated American soft power with hard power and burned through it with nothing in return. Now, we ignore them, the Europeans won’t send help to The Strait of Hormuz or even let US aircraft fly over their territory if they are engaged in this war. He pulled troops out of Germany, but I think the Europeans have now got the same message we got last year, if they didn’t pull them out over this, they would pull them out over something else down the road.
Like Carney warned earlier this year, the US strategy is one of diminishing returns and the US appears increasingly diminished.

It’s pretty clear the Canadian government is keeping plans involving the F-35 close to the vest so they can use it as leverage during CUSMA negotiations, which is the right move. The US government is trying to remove that leverage. Even though we’re only Canada, the F-35 acquisition is pretty important for Lockheed, and the future of the program.
