Rejoin EU has announced a candidate for the Makerfield by-election, bring the total number of confirmed candidates to seven.

It comes after former Makerfield MP Josh Simons, who was elected in 2024, announced on May 14 that he would be stepping down to allow the Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham a chance to return to the Westminster and potentially position himself for a future challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Campaigning has now begun in the Makerfield constituency, with seven candidates confirmed by different parties. Andy Burnham is vying for the spot for Labour, while Jake Austin is representing the Liberal Democrats, Rob Kenyon for Reform UK and Rebecca Shepherd for Restore UK among others.

The Green Party’s candidate for the Makerfield by-election was withdrawn just hours after it was announced he would be standing. The party said Chris Kennedy, a registered nurse and children’s safeguarding specialist, was standing down for ‘personal and family reasons’.

His candidacy was only confirmed on Thursday morning, May 21, with an announcement posted to X, formerly Twitter, at 8.20am. News Mr Kennedy was standing down came hours later, with an email from the party timed at 4.42pm. As a result, the party said its nominations process would now open again.

On Saturday, May 23, Rejoin EU announced that Peter Ward will be their candidate for next month’s by-election in Makerfield.
