A person who opened fire on officers at a Secret Service security checkpoint outside the White House was shot and killed by security personnel, authorities said.
The United States Secret Service said in a statement Saturday that the individual approached the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW around 6 p.m., pulled a gun from a bag and opened fire on officers.
Officers returned fire and struck the suspect, who was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead, the agency said. One bystander was also shot.
The Secret Service said no agents were injured and that U.S. President Donald Trump was unharmed.
Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting.
CNN reported that journalists near the White House heard gunshots and were evacuated into the briefing room before the Secret Service temporarily locked down the White House complex.
