There are some great slang dictionaries available online and every week I try to incorporate just a little bit more into my daily life. Gotta keep the culture alive.
We need more young people signing up to the Alf Stewart program, ya flamin’ galahs.

All local slang is dying across the world as algorithms globalise slang, your local swear words are dead

I started saying drongo again when I had kids and didn’t want to swear in front of them. It’s firmly back in rotation now.

Yep, Australianisms are being replaced by asshole, Zee, fall, diaper…it makes me want to puke

Hmmmmm drongo hasn’t left my vocabulary, but my friends and I had always used the Australian vernacular ironically.

Language evolves? There’s a ton of slang that’s since died and been replaced. What’s the last time you used “lairy” or “Blind Freddy”?

Probably, but this reminded me of the trailer I saw for Apex last night where Taron Egerton says some weird phrase (which I can’t remember) that I have never heard an Aussie say and it’s said in his terrible Aussie accent 😭 I am tempted to watch the movie just for the cringe factor of his accent throughout lol. I usually think he’s ok but the accent is so bad.

Language evolves over time.
As and example, calling a redhead “blue” is proper old-school Australian. But that’s died out, to be replaced by “Ranga”, which is equally as Australian.
So no, Australian slang is not dying out. It’s changing.

I like dingus, but will reintegrate drongo assuming it doesn’t have some kind of terribly racist etymology

My Dad has been calling me a drongo (not in a harsh way, just when I’ve done something dumb) for 30yrs lol. I never knew until a few years ago that a Drongo is actually a stunning looking bird species.

“why is Australian culture dying out? Also why should my taxes pay for the arts and abc?”
Bluey only got made as the BBC decided to fund it, because of the liberals cuts to the ABC.

I would say Aussie slang actually punches above its weight and is very global. We invented the word selfie! I hear Americans saying “rando” all the time, and similar phrases I can’t remember off the top of my head.
Let’s normalise muppet while we are at it. Used in a sentence: Have a go at the muppet over there off his chops at 10am on a Sunday, 2 sleeps till Christmas for that battered sav.
