Georgia is marking its Independence Day with a wide range of cultural, sporting, and public events taking place across the country, including in the capital, Tbilisi, according to media reports.
The holiday commemorates the declaration of independence in 1918 by the First Democratic Government led by Noe Zhordania. The First Democratic Republic of Georgia existed for approximately two and a half years.
Georgia regained its independence in 1991 following a referendum held on April 9. Based on the results, the republic’s Supreme Council adopted the act restoring independence.
As in previous years, the largest and most comprehensive celebrations are being held in Tbilisi. The official program begins with a ceremonial military oath-taking by new conscripts.
Throughout the day, cities and regions across Georgia are hosting a variety of cultural and sporting events, along with activities designed for children, highlighting the national significance of the occasion.
