nats got less than 50% of the vote, they have no mandate for a referendum
Nobody_Cares_99 on
Forgive me if I’m missing something but compared to the last Scottish election in 2021, the SNP got fewer total votes, a lower share of the votes, and fewer seats.
So why is it being spun that they did so amazingly and have a huge mandate?
Theunluckyone7 on
They aren’t going to get independence even if they do have a referendum. They just have to be seen to push for it since it’s in their manifesto.

Well colour me surprised the SNP asked for a vote based on feels and vibes Westminster said no as usual and now the SNP will sulk as usual.
I wonder if it would serve them better to actually govern properly and possibly they may get over 50% of the vote making life a bit more difficult for Westminster.

Don’t we have bigger issues right now?. My opinion is we need to be together more than ever. Why do we always seek conflict and division.

Great
Now if only Westminster had the balls to stop funding Scotland more than England
A Scottish person gets 15,000+ in funding from the government
An english person from Portsmouth or Southampton gets 11,500
Yet we’re constantly told we are are the rich ones

If it was me, I would’ve shown him the door and said on your bike at the same time I would’ve turned and told them that we are no longer gonna be needing them for ship building for military defence which Scotland has a huge part in and we will no longer be sponsoring the space program and then I’ll tell them they need to put a wall in place as they will need a paspot tn travel to England not to mention they will need to come up with their own currency as they were no longer be allowed to use the pound all this is common sense. This is what was put before them last time there was a referendum they want to be independent, but they want to be a part of Europe in my mind that’s completely insane. I should just exchanging one arsehole for another. however, I don’t blame them for wanting to leave with the state of this fucking country

You would have to be an absolute moron to think Scottish independence is a good idea after the stupidity of Brexit. “Hmm, yes, I know separating from a union we’d been part of for 50 years has damaged our economy, travel freedoms, and reputation, but separating from a union of 250 years will be so much easier than that!”
Anyone who loves Scotland should be campaigning for more unity, not less. The most harmful thing to Scotland at the moment is the divisive us-vs-them attitude. “Why do Scotland get a parliament but England gets told they don’t need one?” “Why do the Scots get more per capita than us?” (Can’t remember if this is true or not, but it’s the kind of soundbites I’ve heard.) “Why do Scottish students get to go to uni for free?” It just makes everyone think Scotland gets special treatment and want to see the back of them, which will just make them yet another small nation with very little individual power, needing to petition to rejoin the EU so they can matter on the world stage.
Seriously, it’s fucking stupid, stop wasting time and money on it.

Good and tell wales no referendum for them. One country many nations.

Reject Edinburgh and London oppression
Free Glasgow NOW from the tyranny of corrupt politicians.
We were annexed by the Scots against our will and their wealthy sold us to England.
Should let them have the referendum with the way with how Sturgeon and her hubby have set independence back with their embezzling

Yes obviously.
Even the SNP were saying “if we get a majority”, and they didn’t, so even by the most nationalist of nationalist logic, there’s no mandate for one.
We played this particular game of Russian roulette with our national stability once recently, that’s once more than most countries would allow (for example look at Spain) and there’s really no reason to ever do so again, certainly not without a much bigger democratic mandate than at the moment.
And as other comments say, nationalist parties didn’t even get a majority of votes if you add in the other parties too.
Even with Labour in the UK generally being pretty unpopular right now so nationalists should have been able to poll higher than is really representative (as Plaid Cymru did in Wales).
Also, didn’t we learn from 2014 and 2016 that referendums on divisive issues are a bad idea?
Finally, this is also a good thing because an independent Scotland in the geopolitical world of today would be an absolute disaster area, in a way that wasn’t really forseeable in 2014.

Maybe they should focus on actually helping Scots and fixing current problems rather than diving into this whole new mess

They had a referendum already, you can’t just keep having them. Also, it’s a stupid damaging thing to do. Brexit was dumb and so is this. The remainers saved you.
