Kidney transplant surgery for a patient at Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital.
A young man’s death after a tragic traffic accident in Vietnam has given seven other patients a second chance at life.
Doctors at Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital carried out a major organ donation and transplant operation in April 2026 after the family of a 26-year-old man agreed to donate his organs following confirmation of brain death, Vietnam.vn reports.
With support from specialists from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, nearly 100 medical staff joined the operation. The donor’s heart, liver, kidneys and corneas were used to help seven critically ill patients.
Among them was 19-year-old Ngo Viet The Anh, who had suffered from severe kidney failure and depended on dialysis several times a week. After receiving a kidney transplant, his condition improved and he has now returned home to his family.
Another recent transplant involved 20-year-old patient from Ha Long ward, whose mother, Nong Tieu Toan, donated one of her kidneys to save her daughter’s life. Both patients recovered successfully after surgery.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Quang Nghia from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said the hospital in Quang Ninh has gradually mastered advanced kidney transplant techniques through training and cooperation between medical teams.
Dr. Tran Anh Cuong, director of Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, said the hospital plans to make kidney transplantation a routine procedure during 2026 and later expand into other forms of organ and tissue transplantation.
