Caritas Macau has donated 20,000 euros to assist those affected by the severe storms that struck the Iberian Peninsula in February, the organisation’s secretary-general, Paul Pun Chi Meng, told Lusa.
The donation follows a three-month fundraising campaign launched by Caritas Macau to support victims of depressions Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta. Paul Pun confirmed that 10,000 euros has been allocated to Caritas Spain and a further 10,000 euros to Caritas Portugal, a long-standing partner of the Macau organisation, which was founded in 1951 during the Portuguese administration of the territory.
Fundraising campaign demonstrates local solidarity
The money collected is not a vast sum, but local organisers emphasised that it represents a meaningful demonstration of concern and solidarity from the Macau community. The winter storms caused severe casualties and widespread devastation, with 16 fatalities recorded in Portugal alongside hundreds of injuries and displacements.
Material damage across the Iberian Peninsula remains extensive, encompassing the total or partial destruction of residential properties, businesses, and public infrastructure. The severe weather also triggered widespread flooding, downing trees and structural elements, while causing extensive closures of roads, schools, and transport services alongside prolonged power, water, and communication outages.
Enhanced bilateral cooperation targets Lusophone assistance
The monetary aid coincides with broader structural developments between the regional chapters. During a visit to Portugal in mid-April, Paul Pun witnessed the significant damage inflicted on local infrastructure and forests, and signed a renewed partnership agreement with Caritas Portugal.
Building upon a framework initiated in 2019 for humanitarian aid and emergency response, the updated pact introduces provisions for the integration of mobile populations. Under the agreement, Caritas Macau will support Portuguese nationals facing difficulties in the city, while Caritas Portugal will extend reciprocal assistance to Macau residents in Portugal.
