CryptoCrypto

The complex ecosystem for digital, tokenised assets is evolving at pace. While the price of Bitcoin might grab the headlines and the public imagination, there is continuous evolution – in multiple directions at once – beneath the surface.

Today, with many moving parts, millions of active traders, and increasing interest from the mainstream financial community (and with it, the regulators) the crypto market is developing its own level of maturity. So far, so good. But what’s missing?

Hugo Leijtens, Chief Strategy Officer at Cense, takes up the story. “We know that there are now many different players operating in the crypto sphere,” he says. “We can see active investors, exchanges, virtual asset service providers, consultants and banks all moving at different rates and with different levels of knowledge and exposure to risk.”

This creates a complex ‘mixed economy’ of actors, which is advancing and maturing at speed. Yet the sector still requires a level of baseline knowledge and education to ensure that basic (and commonly agreed) standards and best practice can become embedded for the long term.

    With status comes responsibility

Cense co-founder and CEO Dennis Wohlfarth agrees: “We established Cense to help build out the fundamental infrastructure of the digital asset ecosystem, so we have a privileged position at the very heart of it.”

“And with that position comes responsibility. We see part of our role as an educational one, to spread knowledge, confidence and trust throughout the system. We’re starting with a mission to grow and propagate foundational knowledge, because it’s not possible to establish confidence and trust without it. One follows the other.”

    The ‘a-ha!’ moment

To spread and embed that knowledge in practice, Cense has begun hosting its own podcasts and complimentary live webinars, often bringing some of crypto’s leading lights to the table – and the next in the series are coming in June. There is one date for your diary – Tuesday 16 June – and two different webinars to choose from.

“Our mission is to ensure that you walk out of the room with an ‘a-ha!’ moment and grow your learnings as one of a group of peers”, says webinar presenter Leijtens.

“The first of the webinars is a basic introduction aimed at those taking their first steps in crypto compliance within financial institutions, but it’s also designed to help boost awareness in the wider crypto community.”

“It covers the ‘what’ and the ‘why’,” he says, “setting you up with the basics, seen through the lens of compliance. It will set out to answer a whole load of essential questions: What is crypto compliance? How does it work? What do you need in order to work on a crypto case? And what’s the methodology you’ll use?”

The second Cense webinar on the same day is a deeper dive that requires some base-level knowledge. Tacking the ‘how’ of crypto compliance, it’s designed for compliance professionals who are already specialists at their bank.

“We’ll look at the role of compliance in more detail, seeing regulation from a crypto perspective. In particular, we’ll examine why it’s important to adopt what we call a ‘portfolio first’ approach to crypto analysis, and how to go about developing a working knowledge of it. In our view, this is essential as crypto compliance becomes more sophisticated and the caseload increases”, adds Leijtens.

“Our mission is to ensure that you walk out of the room with an ‘a-ha!’ moment and grow your learnings as one of a group of peers.”

    Raising the bar

The Cense mission to spread knowledge and raise the professional bar in the crypto space is taking shape in other ways. The business operates its own digital academy where entry-level crypto professionals – and even those who simply want to update their knowledge – can join the Cense Academy in either English or Dutch which leads to Cense certification. This approach is paying dividends already: over 500 people have graduated from the Cense Academy in its first year.

“I thoroughly recommend taking the course first,” says Leijtens, “then attending our webinars. You’ll come away with a solid grounding in the essentials of crypto, and crypto compliance, and then be able to continue your crypto journey with greater confidence.”
