
Takaichi moves to second stage of information reform by “strengthening communications interception”. Currently, wiretapping in Japan requires a warrant as part of a criminal investigation for serious crimes. Under the new law, the government will have much more latitude to spy on whoever they like.

Historically, this has only ever been used to spy on citizens who haven’t done anything wrong.

A naive question but why can’t she be stopped before it’s too late?
Primarily to be aimed at foreigners most likely, but who don’t love some good old fashioned spying on your own folks. But with most of their population aging out of competence and many older people not even using smart phones, I only kinda wonder what justification they even put out for expanding their already robust surveillance.
