The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two children died following a drowning incident Saturday afternoon at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson. Deputies and emergency responders were called to the preserve after reports that two siblings had gone underwater in Turkey Creek.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Palmerdale Fire & Rescue responded around 4:02 p.m. Saturday to the preserve at 3906 Turkey Creek Road after receiving a report that two siblings had gone underwater in Turkey Creek.
Authorities said deputies, firefighters and citizens joined in the search for the children. The siblings were later located and transported to UAB Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation indicates the children were with their mother near the creek bank when they went underwater. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
In a statement released Sunday, Turkey Creek Nature Preserve expressed condolences to the family and those affected by the tragedy.
“The Jefferson County Greenways community is mourning the tragic loss of life that occurred at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve yesterday,” the statement said. “We want to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
The preserve also thanked first responders and emergency personnel for their efforts during the response.
“Out of respect for those affected and to allow our staff time to process this tragedy, Turkey Creek Nature Preserve will be closed today,” the statement said.
Preserve officials asked that questions regarding the circumstances of the incident be directed to the appropriate authorities.
