Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reiterated her willingness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to resolve the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea.
Speaking at a rally in Tokyo calling for the return of abductees, Takaichi said she is determined to achieve a “breakthrough” during her tenure on the longstanding issue.
She vowed to consider all options, including a summit with Kim, and urged the North Korean leader to take a “courageous step” for the benefit of both countries’ peoples.
Takaichi reportedly said the Japanese government is approaching the matter with a determination not to miss any opportunity to make concrete progress as soon as possible.
She has repeatedly expressed her readiness to hold direct talks with Kim since taking office.
