The government said a joint crackdown by law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of about 23-thousand-400 drug offenders last year.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination released the figures on Monday ahead of the first anniversary of the Lee Jae Myung administration.

The office highlighted that a record number of online drug offenders were apprehended and a record volume of narcotics was seized at the border during the ten-month period beginning in June last year, when the Lee administration took office.

The prosecution booked 765 drug offenders through direct investigations, arresting 217 of them and confiscating over one thousand kilograms of narcotics.

Police, operating dedicated task forces, nabbed five-thousand-386 online drug offenders and apprehended a total of 12-thousand-774 suspects through intensive crackdowns targeting new psychoactive substances and prescription drugs.

Customs authorities intercepted more than 32-hundred kilograms of drugs at the border, up 307 percent from a year earlier.
