GREEN BAY — CBS is adding a new face to its in-studio NFL crew — and it’ll be a familiar one to sports fans in the state of Wisconsin.
Former University of Wisconsin star and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, who reportedly had an offer from the New York Jets to join their roster as the backup to Geno Smith, is finalizing a deal to join the NFL on CBS studio crew.
Wilson had told the New York Post last month that he was considering making the jump to TV and joining CBS, but the 37-year-old Wilson has not indicated that he’s officially putting an end to his playing career.
After a decade with the Seattle Seahawks that included a Super Bowl XLVIII title and another Super Bowl appearance the following year, Wilson has played for three teams the past four years (Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants).
“I’m trying to figure out what the next best thing is for me to do. I still know I can play ball at a high level, but I also have the opportunity to do TV,” Wilson told the Post in early May. “So, we’ll see what happens.”
Wilson came to Wisconsin for his final college season in 2011 after spending three years at North Carolina State and promptly led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl, completing 72.8% of his passes for 3,175 yards and 33 touchdowns to finish ninth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
A third-round pick by the Seahawks in 2012, he beat out ex-Packers backup Matt Flynn to win the starting job and was at quarterback for the Packers’ infamous “Fail Mary” loss to the Seahawks in Seattle with the NFL’s replacement officials.
And while the Packers frequently had his number — in 10 games (including playoffs) against Green Bay, 180 of 305 passes (59%) for 1,991 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions (a 75.2 passer rating) — Wilson won the biggest game between the teams, when the Packers melted down in Seattle in the 2014 NFC Championship Game.
Two weeks later, though, Wilson threw a goal-line interception in the waning moments of Super Bowl XLIV with a chance to win the game with a touchdown. Instead, the Seahawks’ shot at back-to-back titles ended with a gut-wrenching defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots.
