And both CDU and FDP (no longer a very relevant political party) have people who consider working together with AfD.
“Die AfD muss man auf fachlicher Ebene entzaubern” (AfD must be demystified on a technical level).
Can’t make this up…

Tell enough people often enough that their valid concern make them ‘nazis’, and they will eventually believe you and vote nazi. What a surprise.

Not even a little bit surprising. Much like the arrogant, orthodox Muslims who believe that they’re in possession of God’s final and perfect revelation to mankind—with all other religions being corrupted and inferior forms of the same—a significant share of Germans believe that Western European culture is superior to all others, with the rest of the world having little to offer it other than cheap labor and Döner Kebab. As long as the mainstream parties flail on the economic issues, culture wars will predominate, and parties whose platforms reflect the mainstream view (CDU for the middle class/boomers, AfD for the working class) will dominate the polling numbers. In the end, this sort of thinking is a legacy of the Gastarbeiter era, in which integration simply wasn’t a priority.

People need a culprit for the economical situation… anybody except themselves, of course.
A party which blames the immigrant and the foreign powers for the current economic situation is destined to success, because:
1) it fights a real problem (albeit with wrong solutions)
2) it proposes solutions which affects mostly “the others” (albeit ineffective)
3) its rethoric sounds like the good old days, when money actually circulated (albeit in a unequally distributed way)

That’s seriously concerning.
