It is always hilarious watching the absolute speed at which Trump will throw his closest, long-time ideological allies under the bus the exact second he needs a scapegoat for his own chaotic foreign policy. The loyalty in that circle lasts about as long as a milk carton’s expiration date.

He doesn’t really have an alternative to not doing what Trump told Netanyahu, for known reasons.

On one hand, this is an 11th-hour tantrum from a rapist who finally got into a problem he can’t bluff or bully his way back out of. But on the other hand, he’s accidentally revealing one of the most important truths about the incestuous relationship between the US and its colonial project of Israel. This is probably the only other president I’ve seen besides Reagan openly acknowledging how much unilateral power the president actually has to keep Israel in check.

A large part of the reason that Israel spends hundreds of millions every year in hasbara – from its birthright trips to its psychotic pinkwashing of itself as an LGBTQ haven to simply drowning our congressmen in cash – is to get the white house and the rest of us to either forget the direction that power actually flows, or to make us afraid to say it out loud and thereby potentially compel a potential exercise *of* that power. Israel *knows* and has *always* known that its power is contingent on the complacency and collaborationism of the US ruling class; it’s why they and their toadies like Bari Weiss have spent so much time wringing their hands about campus protesters and demanding their expulsions and deportations – those students are supposed to grow up to be the next generation of elite sponsors for Israeli lebensraum, not its critics and destroyers. It’s so much more useful to the Zionist project for us to be led to believe the fraudulent charade that the US-Israel alliance is a relationship between equals, that Israel pulls the strings, or that the president has to “work tirelessly” for a ceasefire or for anything else it claims to actually want.

Part of the reason why it was unforgivable for anyone in the Democratic establishment to drag their feet about whether to call it a genocide – when the Israeli state explicitly told the Biden WH in Oct 2023 that its plan for Gaza was going to be a genocide, modeled off the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to just kill as many people as they could get away with – was because those Democrats knew that calling it a genocide openly would create both a moral and a legal obligation for them to act to restrain it. It’s the same reason it’s an open secret that Israel has an illegal nuclear weapons program but isn’t typically mentioned explicitly by anyone in power.

I’m not going to hold my breath that this mushbrained pedophile actually exercises the power to yank Israel’s leash, not least because he’s surrounded by omnicidal freaks like Huckabee to talk him down into forgetting once more, but if nothing else I’m glad that the statement exists out loud to cast one more shred of doubt on how much power Israel actually has and how it got there.
