      The festival events in Vienna (Wiener Festwochen) cancelled a discussion with Peter Thiel after protests and threats from artists who said they would pull their participation.

      Should festivals invite controversial figures like this for public debate even if most of patrons and others with some agency opposed? Or was the cancellation justified in this case? Interested to hear how people view this.

      In a broader sense we should stop giving attention to people just because they are economically successful. They have no special insights, no magic sauce, nothing to add to our discourse. They were lucky, that’s it.

      Would that debate have been done in German? If so, that might actually have helped to showcase this idiot to more people who don’t know him and his buddies yet.

      A lot of people here think this was just marketing. They most likely knew exactly what they were doing from the beginning. Without this I wouldn’t even know the Vienna Festival was happening and I am Viennese.
