Main opposition People Power Party(PPP) chair Jang Dong-hyeok stated that the Seoul mayoral election must be held again, saying the fairness of votes had been compromised with the shortages of ballot papers in several polling stations in Seoul for Wednesday’s local elections.
In a news conference at the party’s headquarters in Yeouido, Jang said voters’ right to cast ballots had been seriously violated, adding that the Seoul mayoral race had become tainted, calling the election invalid.
He said the mayoral race for the capital city must be held again and called for an immediate halt to vote counting.
Jang’s remarks come after some ten polling stations in Seoul’s southeastern areas saw disruptions in voting due to a shortage of ballot papers.
Earlier in the day, PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog urged the National Election Commission to immediately suspend vote counting for the Seoul mayor race.
