DP Leads 14 of 16 Key Races amid 14% Vote Counting

    As votes for the ninth nationwide local elections are being counted, the ruling Democratic Party(DP) is leading in 14 of the 16 races for metropolitan mayors and provincial governors, including the Seoul mayor race.

    According to the National Election Commission, 14 percent of ballots cast in Wednesday’s elections had been counted as of 10 p.m.

    In the Seoul mayor race, DP’s Chong Won-o is ahead of Oh Se-hoon of the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) with 65-point-72 percent of the vote.

    In the race for Gyeonggi Province governor, the DP’s Choo Mi-ae is in the lead over the PPP’s Yang Hyang-ja and in Incheon’s mayor race, the DP’s Park Chan-dae is ahead of the PPP’s Lee Jeong-bok.

    The DP has taken the early lead in four regions identified as highly-contested areas in the exit poll jointly conducted by KBS, MBC and SBS.

    The DP’s Chun Jae-soo is leading in the Busan mayoral race, the DP’s Kim Boo-kyum is in the lead in the Daegu mayoral race and the DP’s Woo Sang-ho is ahead in the race for Gangwon Province governor. 

    In the North Gyeongsang Province gubernatorial race, the PPP’s Lee Cheol-woo is likely to win.
