A tiger is a *Panthera tigris*. Panther is an old-fashioned/poetic, way to refer to big cats in general in English.

Couple reasons: word “ვეფხი” stood for a few of the large felines more endemic to Georgia like cheetahs and leopards and only later transformed into the current “ვეფხვი” – tiger.

Because the word vepkhi means a panther, while vepkhvi is a tiger.
