His family says that he faces up to 8-12 years in prison or, in the best scenario, a huge fine. I’m unfamiliar with Georgian laws and thought this was scary – this totally looks like a mistake that I could make! Ofc he could have done better and checked the laws more carefully but still, 8-12 years of prison seems ridiculously serious for an offense like this.

Not ridiculous at all, once you do better and check to find out that the country is in fact ridiculous.
