Minor Rebuilding Korea Party Chair Cho Kuk says he will step down as party leader to take responsibility for his defeat in Wednesday’s local elections.
Cho conveyed the information in a message on social media Thursday, adding that he will do some self-reflection and prepare for what lies ahead.
Cho failed to win the Pyeongtaek-B constituency in Gyeonggi Province during Wednesday’s local elections, coming in third.
The main opposition People Power Party’s Yu Eui-dong won with nearly 35 percent of votes.
Cho said though internal disputes and division are expected in the liberal camp due to the election results, the Rebuilding Korea Party remains the third major party in the National Assembly with 12 seats.
He urged party lawmakers to continue to move forward and make the party stronger under new leadership.
