Dope. I wouldn’t want to end up under the knife of a doctor that can “refuse anaesthetic”, either. People go to them for healthcare!

Well if you are outside the allowed weeks they can for sure refuse in Sweden. We are not like the US where they want to abort all the way to the birth more or less. For us it’s allowed to week 18, and then you need special permission until week 21.

Sweden and Finland being pink reminds me of something that’s usually involved before an abortion can happen.

I wouldn’t want a doctor doing anything to me against their will.
But I’m also one of those crazy people that also think people don’t have to change for someone else’s beliefs or wants.

Sick. Forcing people, doctors above all else, to murder child. Disgusting.

But from my point of view, the doutor should have autonomy. If he doesn’t feel comfortable, another doctor should perform the procedure. This could go against his principles.

Disclamer: In a lot of the countries in grey they can technically refuse but by law also need to redirect you to someone that will do it because else it’s denying medical care to a person which is against the law.

So a person with a medical degree is overridden by someone without one? If a trained doctor says no that should be the end of it. They took an oath to do no harm.

Independantly of what people think about abortion. I find completely crazy that you can force someone who dedicated its life to help other people in their life acting against what they believe is just.
Like, there a lot of country with military services where you can have an alternative as a conscientious objector, but for some fucking reasons doctors in those country can’t ?

Abortion has been very controversial where I live.
On one hand we really love murdering babies, on the other hand we are really hesitant to give women rights.

Two things always stood out to me about abortion politics in Europe.
Abortion was, until recently, the most common form of contraception in the former Soviet Union. Russia still has by far the most abortions per capita in Europe.
Abortion in Western Europe was more restrictive than in the United States when Roe was in place.

That’s crazy! You’d think they’d let the doctors choose if they want to keep their own baby.

Based countries. The implication must be a strong incentive for good bedside manner.
But what are the logistics of exercising this right? Is it as simple as saying alright doc, it’s abortion time. I don’t like the way you just looked at me so I’m gonna take that baby out of you whether you like it or not?

What i don’t understand is that doctors that perform abortion usually work in abortion clinics so why would they decline ? Like you can’t go to a neurolog in sweden and ask them to give you an abortion that makes no sense

A crazy evangelical lady actually tried to make this a supreme court case in Sweden, a few years ago. She got tons of money from some American anti-abortion group, of course, though I don’t think that was known at the time.
Basically she goes to a hospital looking for a job and they’re like, “Oh yeah, part of the job description for this one is doing abortions,” and she’s like, “Well I’m not doing them,” and they’re like, “Okay?” and don’t call her back.
So she goes to the next hospital over, looking for a job, and she’s like, “Yeah I know the job description says I might perform abortions but that’s against my religion so I won’t,” and they’re like, “Aight,” and don’t call her back.
So after doing this like three or four times she goes to court and says, “I am being discriminated against!” because Swedish constitutional law forbids dsicrimination, including when hiring, on the basis of religion and six other things that don’t matter for this story. There are exceptions for when it is completely impossible to adapt the work, (so for example it’s okay to not hire someone in a wheelchair to be a firefighter because it is simply not possible to adapt the work task to the disability, but for almost any other job the employer is expected to be ready to make pretty large accommodations, which they can get some government support for I think) but her argument was that since she can do any other work task she is given the exception doesn’t apply.
The court gives her case (funded with secret yankee money) a once-over and is like, “Bet,” and throw it out. As far as they’re concerned, this is not discrimination but refusal of work.
She takes it to the next level court and they look at it for five minutes and also throw it out. Some newspaper commentator compares the case to if a muslim were to seek employment at a slaughterhouse that deals with pork, but demand to only be assigned to work stations where other meat is used. It would simply not hold water. According to Swedish labor law, if you sign up to work somewhere, the only limit on what you can be asked to do is your job description, and any task that could be considered retaliation for protected activity like unionizing. Her only possible case would be if her job description was altered while she was already working there, but it wasn’t: she was applying for this job specifically.
Anyway, she tried to take it to the Swedish supreme court, but they didn’t take the bait. The European court did, but they also gave the same verdict in the end.

I know this has been turned into a discussion on abortion policy and medical autonomy in general, but I’m also pretty sure its wrong, at least for Czechia I have a source that says that healthcare professionals have the right to conscientiously object ([https://abort-report.eu/statistics/czech-republic/](https://abort-report.eu/statistics/czech-republic/)). Wikipedia corroborates that, but that isn’t necessarily very meaningful. Wikipedia also says doctors can conscientiously object in Bulgaria but I haven’t fact-checked that. Unless someone can find the supposed WHO source the map cites I’m gonna assume this is just something someone assembled based on vibes and hearsay.
