In a dramatic pre-World Cup friendly, Sweden appeared set for a triumphant send-off against Greece until an equalizer deep into stoppage time resulted in a 2-2 draw.
Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres, fresh from Arsenal’s defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final, joined the squad just days before and made his mark by scoring a free kick in the second half that deflected into the net, counteracting Greece’s earlier goal by Kostas Tsimikas.
As both teams made strategic changes, substitute Taha Ali assisted in Gustav Nilsson’s 69th-minute goal, putting Sweden ahead. Yet, Greece’s Giorgos Masouras scored in the dying moments, dashing Sweden’s hopes of victory. Sweden now looks to their World Cup Group F opener against Tunisia on June 14, followed by games against the Netherlands and Japan.
