The government will push for emergency tariff rate quotas and provide discounts of up to 50 percent for rice, eggs, beef and pork as well as fishery products in the second half of the year to reduce the burden of food costs.
Relevant ministers reached the decision during a meeting on specially managing living costs on Thursday.
The government will also work to lower the purchase prices of chicken and eggs while importing 20 million additional eggs from the U.S. and Thailand through July.
The government decided to release its stockpiles of key fish species at a 30 to 40 percent discount off the retail price.
Also during Thursday’s meeting, participants agreed to set up a team tasked with stabilizing supply and demand of food products and managing their prices during the summer season amid heat waves and heavy rains.
