This is probably my last "recovery" post of the season. The dams have stopped filling — total storage has been flat at 42.4% (123.4 MCM) for about a week now. That’s the high-water mark for the year, and the long summer drawdown is starting.
Feels worth stepping back, because this season turned out way better than it looked back in December, when we bottomed out at 9.3% and a 5th straight drought year seemed totally plausible.
Where we landed:
- 42.4% / 123.4 MCM — the most water in the dams since June 2024and almost exactly double last year (21.1%)
- From that late-December low of 26.9 MCM, storage climbed 4.6× in about five months
- Total season inflow: 112 MCM — the most in 4 years. First season over 100 since 2021/22, and 6× the entire 24/25 drought year (which delivered just 18.7)
- Wildly concentrated: 86% of the year’s inflow came Feb–May. Oct–Dec gave barely 2%
- March 35.4 MCM (3rd-best March since 1988), April 23.6 (2nd-largest since 1987/88, behind only April 2019), May 13.2 — a record May
- Nine dams filled to 100%. Vyzakia went 1.9% → 97.6% (~50×), Xyliatos 18% → 99%, Mavrokolympos was literally 0% last year and hit 86%
- Little Arminou (4.3 MCM capacity) took in 21.3 MCM — about 5× its own size — and pumped 20.1 of it up to Kouris. Hardest-working dam on the island
Same caveats as every update though:
- Achna still at 2.0% with zero inflow the entire season — the only dam that got nothing
- Lefkara 18.5%, Kalavasos 24.6% (the latter deliberately drained to feed the Southern Conveyor)
- ~60% of reserves go to agriculture, Cyprus still has the EU’s highest water exploitation index, and one good year doesn’t undo four dry ones. The 10% conservation target stays.
From here the question flips from "how high will it fill" to "how long will it last." June’s added 0.7 MCM so far, and July/August basically deliver nothing.
Wrote the whole season up with the multi-year inflow chart and the storage forecast: fragmata.info/articles/2026-06-05-inflow-season-peak-plateau
The rain season is basically over — Cyprus dams peaked at 42.4% (a 2-year high), nearly double last year. The whole season in numbers
