The ruling Democratic Party(DP) says it will seek a parliamentary investigation into the National Election Commission’s(NEC) shortage of ballot papers during the June 3 local elections.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, DP floor leader Han Byung-do said his party will push for bold reforms to make sure the election watchdog has the public’s trust.
Han said that despite resignations by the NEC chairperson and secretary general, the ruling party intends to determine exactly what happened and what caused the ballot fiasco.
The floor leader stressed the need for fact-finding and enhanced transparency, as he referred to an alleged push by the country’s far right to link the ballot shortages to election rigging.
Han said the issue should not be dictated by a partisan divide and that fact-finding can be accelerated if the rival political parties agree.
