President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the launch of a joint investigation on ballot paper shortages that disrupted last week’s local elections.

In a message on X Sunday, Lee expressed deep regret over the matter and called for a thorough probe, saying that he has instructed the formation of a joint investigation task force with prosecutors and police.

While calling the National Election Commission, an “institution that lost public trust,” the president said that the ballot shortages were a serious issue undermining the foundation of popular sovereignty.

In the message, he also requested the National Assembly launch a parliamentary inquiry to get to the bottom of the matter.

During the June 3 local elections last week, a dozen polling stations in Seoul reported ballot paper shortages, prompting the temporary suspension of voting at affected polling stations.
