South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has nominated Han Seong-sook as the country’s next prime minister in a move that places technology-driven growth and artificial intelligence at the centre of the government’s next phase.
If approved by the National Assembly, Han would become the first woman prime minister under the Lee administration and only the second female prime minister in South Korea’s history after Han Myeong-sook, who held the office from 2006 to 2007.
Han currently serves as minister overseeing small and medium-sized enterprises and is widely recognised for her background in the technology sector, having previously led Naver, South Korea’s leading internet platform company.
Announcing the nomination, presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik said Han’s experience positions her to guide the country through what he described as a historic transition shaped by artificial intelligence while promoting broader economic growth.
The nomination follows the decision of outgoing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok to step down. According to reports, Kim is expected to seek the leadership of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea at its convention later this year.
The cabinet reshuffle comes as the Lee administration completes its first year in office after assuming power last June. President Lee is expected to outline priorities for the second year of his five-year term during a scheduled press conference, with economic transformation, innovation and governance expected to feature prominently.
Preparations have also reportedly begun within the Prime Minister’s Office to support Han ahead of her parliamentary confirmation process.
