SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The first Sunday of June every year is National Cancer Survivors Day, and in Sioux Falls, Avera Health is celebrating the day with survivors and their families.

It’s not just a day to recognize those survivors, but also to remember those who lost their battle.

It’s a great way for many people to reconnect and meet others for the first time who have been through their own battles with cancer, focusing on fellowship.

It’s also a great day to spread awareness on getting checked for cancer.

“Early detection is probably one of the best things you can do to help increase your odds of survival from cancer. The earlier you can catch that cancer, the better, so that we have more options in treating that cancer,” Nathan Hruby said, the director of outpatient cancer services at the Avera Cancer Institute in Sioux Falls.

National Cancer Survivors Day also gives caregivers a chance to reconnect with patients and their families.
