Workers at Kakao, the operator of South Korea’s leading messaging service, will launch a partial strike Wednesday.
The strike will be the first at Kakao since the company’s founding in 2006.
According to industry, labor and police sources on Tuesday, the labor union at Kakao Corporation will stage a five-hour walkout and a rally near the company’s headquarters in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The union is set to demand job stability and improvements to the company’s compensation structure.
While the union reported to the police that it expected some two-thousand workers to gather for the rally from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., police believe the rally will actually draw some 600 participants.
The latest strike is unlikely to have a significant impact on Kakao’s key services, as major service systems are automated and the workforce is being maintained at essential levels given the nature of the IT industry.
