A nonmainstream faction within the People Power Party(PPP) has demanded the resignation of party Chair Jang Dong-hyuk in light of the party’s disappointing results in the June 3 local elections.

A group of junior and reform-minded lawmakers within the PPP held a press conference at the National Assembly on Thursday, calling for Jang’s resignation and urging the new floor leader, Jeong Jeom-sig, to convene a general assembly of lawmakers.

The group insisted that Jang and the party leadership refrain from undermining the seriousness of voting rights violations with unfounded conspiracy theories about rigged elections.

While they said they understood the public anger over the way the National Election Commission handed the ballot shortage, they firmly opposed Jang’s demand for nationwide reelections.

Jang has so far rejected calls for his resignation, citing the “ballot paper shortage incident” as his justification, and has consistently argued for nationwide reelections.
