Residents concerned with the prospect of Small Molecular Reactors at Dow’s Seadrift plant joined for a conference to discuss their concerns.

SEADRIFT, Texas – Residents concerned with the prospect of Small Molecular Reactors at Dow’s Seadrift plant joined for a conference to discuss their concerns.

Members of several environmental groups combined to provide information on risks that can be caused by the addition of nuclear power plants.

Many of the main concerns surrounded the potential impact on local waterways. They expressed concern that there are pollutant factors that may create environmental issues down the line, impacting the recreational and industrial use of local water sources

Some of the activists pushed back against the claim of nuclear power being ‘clean’ energy. They say the infrastructure needed to handle nuclear waste can potentially create hazards susceptible to earthquakes or flooding.

Part of the push back involved the concept of nuclear energy replacing high-pollution producers like coal or natural gas.

Environmental advocates like Tim Judson of the Nuclear Information and Resource Service say that nuclear production is too expensive to replace the current standards for energy production.

Dow’s proposed reactors have been the target of protests as residents have looked to prevent further development of nuclear plans in the area.
