Numbers of unpaid NHK fees have dropped due to an increase in lawsuits against citizens that don’t pay, but backlash is growing-“Forcibly collecting fees even when people don’t watch NHK is absurd. It’s justified on the grounds of public service, but disaster information is available online now”

“but disaster information is available online now” – that just magically appears for free.
Serious question : If it’s mandated, then why don’t they just make NHK fees a part of your income tax?
One of my pet peeve in Japan is that they separate several payments (Residence tax, NHI, Nenkin, Income Tax, NHK) when many developed countries just bundle it all into income tax so that the administrative burden is lower and there aren’t 5 different deadlines to keep track of.
Well, I’ve been paying them, like a sucka, since 1999, when they happened to drop by *the very day* I got my first TV in Japan.
Actually, we do watch quite a bit of NHK, so I guess it’s fair enough.
Not paying. Don’t own a TV or anything like that. Doesn’t stop the NHK ojisan from pestering me though
Just don’t answer and keep your door locked
The letters I get from NHK with big bold red letters goes straight into my shredder. brrrrr
