The number of [trains](https://inews.co.uk/topic/trains?ico=in-line_link) being cancelled in England and Wales has increased 9 per cent despite soaring fares and bonuses for top executives, **i** can reveal.
Of the 6.3 million services planned in the year ending April 2024, around 320,000 were either part-cancelled or fully cancelled, according to figures published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
That equates to around 875 trains per day. The average was 804 trains cancelled per day in the year 2022 to 2023.

Rail passengers across England and Wales saw fares hiked by 4.9 per cent in March, adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of travelling.
A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson said: “We know how important reliability is to customers and apologise to everyone affected by cancelled services.
“Everyone across the railway is working hard to make sure that train services are reliable and punctual for passengers. This includes significant investment to improve infrastructure and rolling stock reliability.
“Train companies have worked hard to maintain as many services as possible, but cancellations or delays also can occur due to various factors; like weather and flooding, industrial action, infrastructure issues such as track or signalling faults, train faults and external incidents such as trespass.
“The railway continues to tackle these issues, and when train delays or cancellations do occur, we are proactively notifying passengers in advance and raising awareness of Delay Repay to simplify compensation claims for affected passengers.”

It’s cheaper for me to drive to London from Nottingham than to get the train for 1 adult and 1 child. Even if you factor in parking say at Watford and spending another hour on the tube from there. Which again I can’t figure as I looked at the train from watford and it’s 40 quid return. Where as say, watford to trafalgar square is 4.70 on the tube (for 1) the overall train cost is about 100 quid from Nottingham.
The only deciding factor is about an hour of travel extra each way if we drive. So, as it stands, fuck the trains.

I suppose saying 875 trains a day in the headline makes a bigger splash than saying 5.1% were cancelled or part-cancelled.

Is anyone surprised? We sold our essential services to private corporations. The goal of every private corporation is to make a profit at all costs. The only solution is nationalisation unfortunately.

Why tie this in to exec bonuses? With the current structure, they’re making bugger all off of rail. Their bonuses will almost certainly be driven by other divisions in these large diverse companies.

Because of this UK trains are actually pretty cheap if you only do advanced singles, i get a refund of some sort on about 1/4 of my journeys so it’s like a constant discount

Your PSA that corporate execs are rewarded for taking money out of a business and handing it shareholders, and that is the only measure of their performance that matters.
They do not care about happy customers or high levels of service or high quality products as ends in themselves, only insofar as poor reputation or unhappy customers impact profitability.
Unless we tackle this fundamental issue of prioritisation, then the enshittification of everything will continue apace.

The Government agreed the increase in December last year, even though inflation was falling and has now reached [the Bank of Englan’d target of 2 per cent.](https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/money/saving-and-banking/inflation-falls-what-means-money-3117388?ico=in-line_link)
