Good news for hikers as the summer vacation begins: Prat Stream Nature Reserve, Ein Mabua, has reopened to the public following the completion of infrastructure and accessibility improvements at the site.

As part of the project, a new parking lot with approximately 60 parking spaces was built, a safe pedestrian access path was created between the parking area and the site entrance, and the restroom facilities were renovated for visitors.

Admission to the site is free during regular opening hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, advance registration through the Israel Nature and Parks Authority website is required.

Ein Mabua is considered one of Israel’s most unique springs. Located along Prat Stream (Wadi Qelt), it is one of the three main springs that feed the stream. Its defining feature is its “pulsating” flow – rather than flowing continuously, the spring releases water in periodic bursts, similar to the rhythm of a heartbeat.

This rare geological phenomenon occurs when groundwater accumulates in natural underground rock cavities and is released once the water reaches a specific level. According to estimates, only around 100 springs of this type exist worldwide.

Ein Mabua is particularly impressive during the summer months, when its pulsating flow is easier to observe. In winter, as rainfall replenishes the underground water system, the spring tends to flow more continuously.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority invites the public to visit and enjoy one of the Judean Desert’s most distinctive natural attractions, where desert landscapes, fresh water, and a rare geological phenomenon come together.
