Passenger rail services will resume on 1 August on the Dombóvár–Komló regional line in Hungary, which was closed in 2023. Trains will cover the route in 42 minutes – eight minutes faster than the replacement buses – and will provide connections to the InterCity services between Budapest and Pécs.
The resumption of services on railway line 47 was ordered by the Hungarian Ministry of Transport and Investment, following infrastructure maintenance work.
Over more than 18 km of track, ballast cleaning and track alignment work was carried out. Technical teams also repaired the concrete sleeper fastening systems at approximately 6,500 points.
Passenger services between Dombóvár and Komló had been suspended in 2023 and replaced by buses.
Trains every two hours and connections to InterCity
Single-carriage Bz diesel multiple units will operate on the route, and the trains will be designated S447.
The journey time will be 42 minutes, eight minutes shorter than that of the replacement buses.
With the exception of the morning and evening peak periods, trains will run on a regular two-hourly service.
The train timetable has been drawn up in collaboration with local organisations so that passengers in Dombóvár can benefit from connections to the Mecsek InterCity trains, which run between Budapest and Pécs, as well as services to Kaposvár and Baja.
The first train will depart from Dombóvár at 4.24, whilst the first service from Komló will leave at 5.21 for Sásd, where passengers will be able to continue their journey on an InterCity train.
The first e-ink railway display
The resumption of services will be accompanied by the modernisation of passenger information systems.
New regional display boards will be installed at stations and stops along Line 47, and Komló station will be fitted with a standardised display unit for showing information.
At the Mecsekpölöske halt, an e-paper terminal will be installed, displaying real-time information on train services.
The display uses an e-paper screen, similar to those found on Kindle e-readers. It consumes very little energy, is clearly visible even in direct sunlight, and updates only when the displayed information changes.
According to the company, this will be the first such display installed at a railway station, following previous trials of the technology at bus stops.
The Mecsek day ticket is back
From 1 August, the Mecsek ticket will also be reintroduced; it is valid for 24 hours and costs 1,490 forints, approximately EUR 4.1 .
The ticket can be used on the Dombóvár–Komló line, on certain sections of the Dombóvár–Bátaszék and Budapest–Dombóvár–Pécs routes, as well as on regional buses operating within the area covered by these lines.
The reduced-fare ticket costing 400 forints, approximately EUR 1.1, previously introduced on replacement buses, will also remain in use until at least the end of 2026. This ticket will also be available for purchase on board trains. Conversions are based on the European Central Bank’s reference exchange rate of 24 July 2026, which is 361.88 forints to the euro.
The Mecsek ticket is also being promoted for tourist trips to the region’s mountain trails, including sections of the Hungarian Blue National Trail.
