Were people hoping he’d say no? Surely we would expect our government to work with other foreign governments on areas of mutual interest, even if we disagree with them politically.

He’s completely right, politics means working with countries we may not always agree with or like the policies of.
We work with Orbans government in Hungary, worked with PiS when they ran Poland, worked with Putin, work with Xi, work with the al Sauds, work with Bahrain.
Considering most of the illegal immgrants springboard to the UK from France, having a french far-right and a moderate left or right UK seems ideal to me. It will be a solid first line of defence for illegal immgration to the Uk. Is that a double standard? No, becasuse I don’t live in France lmao

Well fucking obviously, we’d have to work with one of our closest partners and allies regardless of who’s in charge, unless they start a war or something I’d expect us to work with them.
I mean… The real question is how badly Sarkozy, Hollande and Macron fucked up during their times in power. Based on the fact that a good chunk of France willingly voted National Rally (basically their equivalent of the BNP), I’d say they fucked up royally.
Macron has basically given Marine Le Pen a golden ticket to the Élysée Palace.

I mean…Yes? I hate the far right as much as any sane person but I think we can both agree that if the EU booted us out over the last 14 years of Tory government, we would have said it’s unreasonable.
Sanctioning ourselves for ideological reasons is just essentially Brexit. Refusing to work with our nearest major trading partner, with whom we share proximal borders because we don’t approve of what their own citizens voted for is just madness.

France is an incredibly important country on the world stage and an incredibly important ally to *us*. Crossing your arms and holding your breath because they’re being run by meanies isn’t going to change that. We have to work together regardless. and it’s much better to be *in the clubhouse* than outside of it now Le Pen is going to become much more inline with Europe’s existential enemy.

Realistically Starmer is going to have to fall in line with Europe, particularly on immigration issues across the continent people are showing their discontent.
What does this mean? Will Centrist/left-leaning Remainers not want to a closer relationship with Europe after all seeing as most of Europe is shifting towards the right? Will right-leaning Brexiteers seek a close relationship with Europe in tackling immigration and not wanting Britain to be an outlier in a topic that was their main reasons for supporting Brexit in the first place? It does seem that the Brexit/Remain argument will flip sides.
Regardless of which I’m convinced Starmer will be disappointing Centrists by shifting to the Right over the next five years.
