Bucharest, Romania – Romania and Poland scrambled fighter jets as an urgent precautionary measure. This move coincided with heightened military aviation activity and suspicious aerial movements near NATO’s eastern border. The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that its radar systems detected an aerial target moving northeast of the village of Vilkovo—located within Ukrainian territory—in close proximity to the Romanian border.
In response, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets immediately took off from the 86th Air Base in Borcea as part of combat air policing missions to closely monitor the situation. Authorities also declared an air alert in the northern part of Tulcea County for 40 minutes. However, the Ministry of Defence later confirmed that no actual breach or violation of Romanian airspace had been detected.
Precautionary measures by Polish forces and border security
In a parallel development, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces announced the intensive, precautionary deployment of its military aircraft following a series of large-scale Russian airstrikes—utilizing various aerial attack assets—against targets in central Ukraine. The Command stated that these preventive measures are primarily aimed at “ensuring the utmost protection of Polish airspace, particularly in the eastern part of the country.”
Exorbitant financial costs for aerial security sorties
Meanwhile, media reports have highlighted the economic burdens associated with these ongoing responses. The “NaTemat” portal noted that the frequent sorties flown by Polish fighter jets in response to Russian aerial activity in Ukraine impose heavy financial costs on taxpayers. According to official data from the Polish Ministry of Defence, the cost of a single hour of flight for an F-16 fighter jet ranges between 76,000 and 77,000 zlotys—approximately 21,000 US dollars. As reported by the “Novosti” news agency, this reflects the steep financial price borne by the treasuries of countries neighboring the conflict zone.
