It will be not easy to decouple from US. Canada is massively dependent on US. Canadian leaders didn’t have the long-term vision to diversify their economy sooner.

Carney planning for a US invasion is silly.
The real danger for Canada is economic. That’s what the US has already focused on.
Equally Canada is a country where its military members are not paid enough to house themselves. It’s a country with extraordinarily expensive housing, low salaries, and disaffected youth. You cannot fight a war with military members on the verge of homelessness.
If Carney really wants to defend Canada – it needs to start at home. He needs to find a way to make a more equal society. He needs to find a way where the smartest in the country do no immediately move to the states for cheaper housing and better paying jobs.
The lack of focus by his government on living standards is Canada’s largest security risk – on all fronts.
Same risk as most neo-liberal governments are facing around the world and most are coming up short with solutions. Tax cuts for trillion dollar corporations are not the solution.
Oh let’s check his stance some time later. Decoupling from the paws of the states is very difficult, and even more difficult to a country next door to the US.

“In a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times at its headquarters in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, Mr. Carney described in meticulous detail how he was systematically reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States for key technology — from space satellites to fighter jets — in an effort to make his country far less vulnerable to American threats.
The Canadian government is reviewing a planned order of 88 Lockheed Martin F-35 jets and is also considering a counterproposal to acquire Swedish Saab Gripen fighters. Mr. Carney did not specify where he was on that decision, but he did say that he wanted to use Canada’s newly bolstered defense budget to order aircraft that perform well in the Arctic.
“It is a real decision because of differing capabilities, because of strategic dependencies, and because of the economic return,” he said.

Cannot overemphasize how far Canadian sentiment has moved over the past year from “boy, *Trump* sure is an idiot” to “*The US* is an existential risk to our future”.
