They shouldn’t apologise for banter – absolute joke. We should just them sweaty socks and move on.
Most Scots wanted England to lose as we’re tired of every two years a crap England team is bummed to the hilt and delusion takes over. This England nationalist crap gets beamed into Scottish and Welsh homes too. After all we pay for Sky and BBC licence fees too.
It’s more weird than insulting if anything. I’ve never known a people to be so obsessed with a country they despise.

As a UK citizen who is thinking of retiring up in Scotland when im finished here, this is really hateful.
Also dumb nationalists will lap this shit up – they dont get that if the SNP get their way plenty many more people will be retiring in their towns.

Nothing wrong with a good bit of football banter but this was a bizarre line to run with considering the stereotype could just as easily be applied to Scottish people who holiday in/retire in Spain.

This was one of The National’s milder anti-English headlines. Surprised this is the one that they apologised for. It just seemed like business as usual.

Football became a collective madness. It should be just a fun way to exercise. But no, humans have to add rivalry, nationalism, division, mind boggling amounts of money, racism, corruption, fanaticism, idolatry, hooliganism, excessive drinking, etc.

Scottish go 5 minutes without mentioning England challenge level impossible. It’s like they only exist in relation to the country they hate so much.
I’m English and that seemed kind of funny to me. Possibly because it’s those with a history of oppression/inferiority complex that worry more about someone taking the piss. Possibly because it’s very much a ‘lower’ class stereotype that the English would use about their compatriots. But it’s also true to say that here in Scotland a certain one sided obsession with England comes to light at these events and can cross a line. And sometimes in a pub, online or in graffiti there seems not much between English or Scottish nationalists as far as their nasty streak.
I say this as an Indy voter – The National is a fucking embarrassment. It’s a collection of bloggers, not a paper. Their online material is mortifyingly amateurish, full of errors and ads. It does the cause for Scottish independence more harm than good.

I am Northern Irish, been living in England for nearly a decade now. I used to get in a bit on the jokes about England, we all hate English, we all revel in the delicious glory of England losing, etc. But it’s got boring now, there’s not really any fun in it anymore, it seems to get a bit nasty at times. At the risk of sounding like bum licker, it really does just seem like jealousy at this point. Like, yes, England lost in the final, but where are Scotland at ffs?
For the last few years I’ve been supporting England, because at this point I’d love to see them get one up on all these seething wankers. And I feel terribly for Southgate. Seems like a really decent bloke who has been chasing redemption for thirty years and watching him come so close is kind of heartbreaking.
Well this furore sparked by their “apology” is getting The National more coverage than their 3000 strong circulation would usually garner so I suppose it’s a decent enough strategy.
The response in r/Scotland was as critical as the response here, with the additional point made that the fan they used in their unfunny photoshop is a noted anti-racism campaigner, to whom they have declined to apologise directly.
