Certainly need to be tougher on driving offences, doesn’t need fines, or jail time, just take the license of more people who have shown they are unsafe. That is then their problem. Let them redo their test in a couple years maybe.
this letting people keep their licence because they depend on it is bullshit, get a new job if you can’t do it anymore.

Anyone would think that less cops means more people think they can get away with it, so more people die.
Somethings can’t be solved by just handing out crime numbers for an insurance claim.

Possibly a daft idea but is there any at-home test someone can take to see if they’re over the limit before they drive? I think a lot of people say “Ah I’m fine to drive”, unaware that they’re twice the legal limit. I’m sure one day there’ll be an app that can do it.

Just fuck ‘em on insurance – nothing this kind seems to whinge about more. They’ll get the message pretty soon once this sort of behaviour impacts their wallet and/or ability to get to work.
Wonder if the data has picked up any difference? Need to be a bit careful as roads are different with mite rural and less motorway – but would be interesting anyway.

The laws dont help. You are allowed some beer and be under the limit but no one really knows how much. Because it depends on strength. Then you have people who drive home the morning after a night out who are still probably over the limit
Just have zero tolerance. Any alcohol in your system is illegal

Living in Scotland I wouldn’t even have one pint and drive.

I’ve just gotten back into driven after a decade. I’ve noticed people are much more impatient and generally angry when when driving. Maybe it’s just me.

Statistically we should consider the rate of DUI offences is probably much, much higher than is even being detected.

Society needs to take a zero tolerance policy on this, there should be longer driving bans and opportunity to award permanent bans. This should be coupled with prison (once they’re built) for driving while disqualified. Cars are lethal weapons and a bad driver is a danger to everyone. Even if a drunk driver winds up in a ditch alone, they’ll still be using medical resources that could go to someone else.

It’s not the law it’s the culture and it’s also changed to a way that promotes alcoholism in the long term and people who are heavy drinkers will still drive and go to work until they end up in accident.
In my dad’s day, they were all heavy boozers still who worked In industry. But the social expectation was you go to the pub socialise have 4 or 5 John smiths at 3.8% or your local bitter. It shuts the door at the 11pm there’s no getting wrecked on shorts.
There’s no supermarket or 24hr licensing laws for the local connivence onestop. You have a situation where a pint is more expensive than mass produced alcohol in the stores today.
What it translates to is a level of heavy alcohol
Consumption in a certain demographic or persons with disposition. As they still have to drive to work they at some point will get in a vehicle and cause an accident.
It’s not some nanny state. But look what they’ve done to smoking of which people are not impaired after a cigarette but you will probably get cancer.
It’s so benign, because it’s almost cool to drink craft ale some of which some are 7% by volume or fancy coloured gins for women.
So it is a culture and a culture that’s affects people unequally.

Driving without due care or attention seems to be the highest in 13 years (coincidentally when I passed my test). There’s clearly fuck all being done about that let alone drunk driving. Or maybe moving to Essex has just put me among more bad drivers…

I’m not making excuses for people who drink drive because I won’t even get behind the wheel after one drink, but I do feel like some of this could be tackled with better alternatives.
There’s a lack of provision of public transport in lots of areas that need it, and where there is good provision it often isn’t available after it gets dark. When it is available, it often feels unsafe because of the types of people you have to share public transport with at night. Taxis can be expensive, or there’s surge charges for busier times.
I still think this is unforgivable but if society is going to do something about it we need to provide people ways to get home from drinking activities that make them feel safe. I know drink driving isn’t safe, but to the people that do it, it obviously feels that way.

Would need to look into the stats, but have some suspicion that as there are more cars on the road now, and more total miles driven, this is not an unlikely consequence.
More policing would no-doubt help, but also public transport and urban design play a role. Reducing the raw number of cars and bringing the number of miles driven down by densification and better public transport would have an effect not just on drink driving, but all driving-related death.

In addition to this, the smell of weed coming from cars is now commonplace. Why anyone feels the need to drive with a joint on the go, at 2 in the afternoon is anyone’s guess. Driving while stoned is one thing, but driving while getting stoned is another level of idiocy. There’s drinking and then driving, and there’s drinking while driving.

Limits are lower in Scotland.
