Reading these reports shows that GMP has a culture of misconduct.
I’ve read the full report. She’s right in most cases but it’s so poorly written and at times legally wrong as to be bordering on worthless. There’s huge chunks of information missing and the repeated use of inflammatory language doesnt help set a balanced tone. That said most of the arrests were illegal and unnecessary.
It’s gonna take a shit ton of money to fix it and that money is not coming, so I don’t hold out much hope of any significant change. Add to that most fronline cops aren’t even fully qualified (their classed as still being in their probationary period) and it’s gonna take generations to fix.
The GMP were the ones in the Andrew Malkinson case . I wouldn’t put too much trust in them if they are happy to send someone to prison for 17 years for a crime they obviously didn’t commit.
There’s an explanation in a video on that page of what a properly done, lawful arrest would be. It involves reasonable suspicion.
The problem is that in the moment, on the street, you have absolutely no way of arguing the reasonableness of anyone’s suspicion, so in practice they can arrest anyone, at any time, for any reason or none. If these arrests don’t result in a charge the circumstances will never be looked into in any detail, and even if they are, the police officers involved will not face any personal consequences.
So, in practice, they can do essentially anything to anyone. Nobody’s checking. Obviously, the police think this is great.
What have GMP learned – in all probability, nothing; they are no doubt collectively shitting themselves with fury because some uppity liberal has questioned their god-given right to sexually humiliate and brutalise members of the public who inconvenience them. They won’t learn because these knuckle dragging thugs are incapable of that.
