Fusion could solve so many problems if perfected. We would be as Gods harnessing our own suns.

    2. This is something that should be funded by the state but I assume we have to give some pensioners a bit more money.

    3. If they do perfect this, I don’t want it to be state owned or privately owned.

I would rather it were state-*built* and *commonly*-owned. So that the state builds it (and probably administers/maintains it), but they do not have ownership of it. Every person with British citizenship holds a share in it. This means the state can’t sell it (because it isn’t theirs to sell), or do anything at all beyond simply running it, without a >66% majority in a referendum. Any and all profits are passed to the British public through bill reductions or other similar means. Could be difficult to literally pay out dividends to 60-odd million people, but if doable… why not do that?

Alas, too many people think everything has to be either state owned or privately owned, and they have no time for normal people genuinely having a real stake in anything of value.

    4. Years ago as a student I worked on JET, which was an experimental reactor. The amount of money needed to make it into a usable power plant was astronomical.

But then, when you consider how much is spaffed on bitcoin mining and AI video generation, maybe it’s actually possible.
