Millimeter wave drilling was researched at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center for over a decade. What do people think about its potential for geothermal energy? And what other future uses might it be good for?
For now, very limited. It’s still difficult to deal with the molten rock and very expensive.
Eventually it may enable deeper, faster drilling. For now, it’s just cool, expensive science.
