This is yet again trans people being used as political footballs. I don’t actively give a shit about people misgendering me unless done maliciously. I do actively give a shit that my gender isn’t legally recognised, that my MtF/FtM brothers and sisters have to wait potentially up to 7 years for an appointment to decide if the NHS feels they’re trans enough for help, and that transphobia keeps getting worse and worse.

Kier of course will not fix anything, and the community at large has 0 hope of him doing so, but the polite thing for both Labour and the Tories to do is just leave us TF alone at this point. I don’t see that happening either unfortunately, “Scary transes!” makes for great clickbait news.

    2. This is a bit of a weird one for me. I can definitely see how misgendering could be and is used in actual hate speech, but also I think it’s too broad a notion to be an all out hate crime. Like I would be hard pressed to find an example where someone has used a racial slur by accident, but accidently misgendering someone could be quite common.

So I think this is the correct decision. But maybe there are some aspects I’m missing

    3. I can’t see why anyone would insist misgendering be made a crime. It’s clearly very rude if it’s persistent, but being rude isn’t illegal.

Accidentally making a mistake shouldn’t be a hate crime, but repeatedly doing the same thing is bullying and harassment, that is an important distinction to draw.

Also, because people seem to forget this, for something to be a “hate crime” an actual crime must also have happened. Hate is an aggravating factor, not a crime in and of itself.

    5. Manufactured outrage based on speculation, their basis for which was a statement that crimes targeted at queer people should be treated as aggravated which is already how hate crimes work.

Misgendering has never been a crime, at most it could indicate an existing crime was motivated by hostility towards a protected characteristic.

    6. I’m probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but – even though I disagree, I do believe people have a right to hold and speak their own beliefs about gender and sex. So if they don’t believe that you can transition from male to female or female to male, it is their right to refuse to gender you as you believe you are. Crucially it’s set apart from racial slurs in that slurs contain inherent dislike and hatred. Whereas this could very well come down to personal belief about gender. And we don’t get to force others to think the way we do.

Rude and illegal and two separate issues. I have a non-English sounding name, and too many times people would mix it up with a similar sounding name (think Tim and Tom). Is it annoying? Yes. Is it offensive? Depends. Should it be illegal? Probably not
