In parliament, Rayner said something to the effect of “Social housing will go to those who need it”.
Essentially admitting that British citizens won’t be prioritised. It’s not (or at least shouldn’t be) controversial to say that public resources should be prioritised for British citizens.
We should be housing asylum seekers in their own facilities, and if we’re giving social housing to recently arrived economic migrants, then why are they here?
Good luck if you’re British and on the waiting list for social housing. They increased immigration to increase house prices and private rents, then they make it impossible to get social housing.
I see Labour are intent on making ReformUK the next government.
Just to be clear, the Tories were planning to bring in the 10-year limit earlier this year, but didn’t actually implement it. If they thought it was important they would’ve implemented it years ago.
Also, as things stand, non-asylum seekers only get access to social housing after they stay in the country for 5 years, so it’s not like someone can just get a work visa and get social housing.

Maybe the bigger issue is foreign ownership in new builds. I do not understand why it’s possible. Apparently 70% rent the houses back out. Ridiculous! Ban them from owning them completely

Labour reading the room brilliantly on this. Why now of all times?
This makes no sense to me, in so many other countries around the world, only people that have been living in a country for a set amount of time are able to get certain benefits (or even be allowed to buy a property)
Why should someone that has just arrived in the country that doesn’t work, can’t speak English, doesn’t identify with Britain in any way, has never paid taxes, possibly will never pay taxes, get a free house, and free everything else.
Fully expected. It’s anathema to the modern Labour Party to see any difference between a foreign national and a citizen of this country.
Labour has a big majority, but it’s a mile wide and an inch deep. Reform will no doubt make hay with this. Expect Labour to suffer big time at the next election if they carry on like this

I know conservatives were beyond terrible but I think we’re in for a bad time with Labour.
Seems really poor timing to take this decision when we’ve had literal riots stoked up based on immigration by the far right. This feeds them such easy ammo to radicalise more people.

To be blunt: someone who came to this country recently and has struggled economically has the option of going back home with their tail between their legs.
Someone who was born here, or who has lived here long term and fallen on hard times, doesn’t have that option. Here is their home and they don’t know anywhere else. There has to be value in that.
It’s completely wrong to not factor this in when making decisions about social housing.
I received a Section 21 after a decade of living in the same flat. Couldn’t afford the current private renting cost and had no idea what I was going to do. Mental health took a nosedive and I ended up in hospital. I was told by the council they wouldn’t help me, as “keyworkers cannot have mental health issues,” and I should contact them if I become “street homeless”.
I work with a lot of families who enter the UK for better prospects and are given top priority as they have almost always brought children with them. I work with many families who receive government assistance and send a portion of it abroad to relatives. I work with people whose rent is below £500 in inner London and is paid in full. I know a handful who are saving to build homes abroad, while occupying social housing here.
I was born here and it is very difficult not to become resentful of the system.
This is what the labour voters voted for. You reap what you sow.

So what happens to those that have been on the application list for those 10 years and still don’t have a place?
I get the whole “economic migrants are exempt for 5 years” but also, and I hate to sound like a Reform nutter, how about we prioritise our own?
People who get rent trapped for years will ultimately be in competition with droves of people only increasing year on year due to this change. I’m happy to be corrected on it. But regardless this will only stoke the culture war fires. Bad move by Labour even if the headline sounds worse than it actually is.
Let this be a lesson to you all. Voting changes nothing when all these scumbags just undercut their voterbase and do what they feel like. Never let anyone guilt you into voting for a party again just because we have to get the old party out. Fuck all of them. I’ll continue drawing dicks on my ballots.
Disgraceful, do you want more riots? Because this is how you get more riots. British people absolutely should be given priority, actually those who have paid taxes the longest and fall on hard times should be given priority.
