Non-hallucinogenic psychedelics are being explored as the new frontier of psychiatric treatment, although there is still an ongoing debate whether the hallucinogenic effect is required for the antidepressant effect. Scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery in psychedelic research by identifying distinct neural circuits responsible for the therapeutic and hallucinogenic effects of psychedelic drugs. Using a mouse model and the drug 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), researchers were able to separate the anti-anxiety properties from the hallucinogenic side effects.

The hallucinogenic effects are where a lot of the therapeutic benefit comes from. Having a heart to heart with your dead parent is a cathartic experience.

Plus all that juicy, juicy patentability, can’t forget about that. (It’s entirely the reason.)

If they’re correct, and after thousands of people benefit from this without side effects, I’ll definitely try it out. I know too many people who would benefit from this.
I got a lot of progress from the disassociative properties of psilocybin(I wonder if that’s part of the hallucination aspect that they’re blocking).
I finally got to see myself without my ego and biases getting in the way. It helped me get away from the lies my ego tells myself.
Seeing myself for what I truly am helped me push myself to overcome a lot of unresolved issues, and I’m much better for it.

Sheesh. The effects are the fun part. Why do we think we can’t have fun while getting treatment!? It’s like we think if it’s medicine we MUST be miserable.

Does this mean they’ll also have non-psychedelic hallucinogens available?

I guess I understand the need to bring the positive effects to the mass market minus anything that some people are incredibly sensitive to. It’s easy for me to say ‘nut tripping is the best part of tripping!!’
But, it’s not for everyone.
I would like to think that this is the reason for Big Pharma’s pursuit of this research, to bring positivity to the masses. But the cynical part of me knows that it’s so that they can patent a naturally occuring chemical and charge through the nose for it.
For the rest of us, buying a grow bag and spores for £30 and growing 500g of mushrooms in your own cupboard and taking your mental health into your own hands is the perfect alternative until they perfect their non-trip trip drugs.
Minimising anxiety and bad trips is really easy. Get your set, setting, mind set all in order. Clean your house, make a playlist of great music, turn your phone off and make sure you’ve got absolutely no interruptions for 10 hours and get a trusted trip sitting should you need one. I’ve seen several documentaries (there are some great ones on Netflix) about the pursuit of treatments for resistant depression, PTSD and OCD using psilocybin with incredible results lasting 6 – 12 months at a time without having to take a pill every day. However, even though they dressed up the hospital rooms to be quite comforting (low lighting, soft music, lots of blankets etc.) it’s still a hospital room. I feel like a walk thorough a forest or nature would be far better than being cooped up in a hospital bed!
They’re still working on a ‘protocol’ to get the most out of using natural mushrooms. They should ask me to design a comfortable few rooms to work in!
Just off the top of my head, you need a music room with either big speakers or selection of wireless headphones and several playlists ranging from psychedelic music designed entirely for that state of mind, chilled out stuff and maybe some more upbeat dance music for people that get a rush of energy and want to have a dance.. no shame in getting high and wanting to move your body. Let go.. enjoy! That’s a huge part of overcoming depression is learning to drop the inner voice of self criticism, let go and enjoy yourself. Also, a dim room with black lights, full of bean bags and tie-dye and magic eye posters on the walls, stuff to look at! Maybe a conservatory full of plants and nature. Finally – if you have the attention span (unlikely) then some easy-going classic comedies. The greatest film ever made to watch on mushrooms is Weekend at Bernies. I broke my face muscles from laughing so hard with a friend of mine. The afterglow from that experience continues on 20 years later to today. I smile whenever I think about that afternoon..

What the hell are non-hallucinogenics like? Just super emotional drugs?

So it’s like taking amphetamines and making modafinil and adrafinil; instead of increasing dopamine (amphetamines) just limit the reuptake of the dopamine, and still stay awake and alert, but without the primary addictive effects?
